Successful Man Utd offer expires but final push predicted as budget rises

Manchester United are ready to make a late push for Frenkie de Jong, but the offer they had accepted by Barcelona has expired, according to a reporter.

De Jong has been something of an obsession for Manchester United during the current transfer window. Erik ten Hag has wanted to reunite with his former Ajax player, who was seemingly available to leave Barcelona.

But the terms of his exit from the La Liga club, who still owe him some deferred wages, have held everything up. What’s more, there have been doubts about De Jong’s willingness to sign for a club outside the Champions League.

However, one former player recently claimed Manchester United know De Jong wants to join them, or else they would have given up their pursuit by now.

And the Netherlands international has been named as one of the players the club could go after in the last week or so of the transfer window, thanks to an increasing budget.

That theory has now been backed up by Dutch reporter, Marcel van der Kraan. He has claimed that Manchester United now have a higher allocation of funds for the final stage of the transfer window.

Some of them could go into a new bid for De Jong. Incidentally, the one Barcelona accepted (worth around £72million) is no longer valid.

However, the Spanish side are still under scrutiny for their finances. They have not yet been able to register summer signing Jules Kounde, for example.

Man Utd not giving up on Frenkie de Jong – and neither are Chelsea

Hope remains, then, that they may have to sacrifice someone like De Jong, even if he has been doing his best to convince them of his value to the team.

Ten Hag has kept in contact with De Jong, although there has been a lack of progress in convincing him. Now, it is time for a big push towards the end of the window.

That said, De Jong may still snub Manchester United in favour of another Premier League suitor, Chelsea. The Blues, unlike the Red Devils, can offer him a continuation of Champions League involvement.

But the status of their own pursuit is not entirely clear at this moment in time.
