A “unique” Serie A star who has drawn comparisons with a Premier League legend is poised to spark a mass transfer scramble for his signature, per a report.
Since moving to Bologna in 2020, Aaron Hickey has developed into one of European football’s most intriguing assets. The 19-year-old Scot took a leap of faith when leaving Hearts to test his mettle in Serie A. Judging by his performances this season, that decision was a wise one.
Indeed, Hickey – who can operate in a wide variety of positions – has featured in all but two of Bologna’s Serie A fixtures this season. The two he missed were through suspension and a Covid-enforced absence.
The right-footer began the season at left-back but has operated in a more advanced position since. He has also deputised at right-back as well as on the right side of midfield.
And per 90min, it is that versatility that has seen him attract a lengthy list of suitors.
The outlet state that each of the traditional top six clubs have actively scouted Hickey. Furthermore, he is on the radars of Leeds, Brighton, Southampton, West Ham, Leicester and Brentford.
The mass Premier League interest is replicated on the continent. The article adds interest from within Italy is rampant, most notably from Juventus and Napoli. Bayern Munich are also in the frame.
Aaron Hickey compared to Prem legend
It is Hickey’s ability to operate on either flank that is his unique selling point. Indeed, a 90min source revealed he is already drawing comparisons with Man Utd legend Denis Irwin among scouts.
The Irishman was equally two-footed and made his home on the left side of United’s defence despite being right-footed. Irwin won seven league titles during his time at Old Trafford and was a key cog in Sir Alex Ferguson’s side in the first decade after the Premier League’s formation.
The 90min source stated: “Hickey is a top talent, almost unique in that he can play equally well on either side.
“But that is because he is as good with both feet. Some scouts have compared him to Irish legend Denis Irwin, but with better feet!”
Hickey has bagged four goals and one assist thus far in the current campaign. That form saw him recently given his maiden call-up to Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad.
But while the interest in a summer move is ramping up, a deal for one of the myriad of suitors isn’t straightforward – not least because there are so many interested parties.
Hickey is described as being happy with his current station at Bologna. However, he reportedly does see his future in the Premier League.
As such, it would take an offer he and Bologna can’t refuse this summer to bring his return to the UK forward.
